Grand tour
- Our Exclusive Tour Club is an original, flexible program which offers suggestions on customized private tours and sea tours and private transfers within Naxos and is based on our customers’ preferences, time and interests.
- We start our excursion with a visit to the Glass Workshop and Exhibition in Galanado. We begin the day with something special, creative, enjoyable, and colorful! The artist and creator guides us through the art and beauty of handmade glass.
- Next, we enter a sacred and mystic place in a hidden plain at the area of Sagri, the Temple of Demeter, Goddess of Earth and fertility, mother of Persephone or Kore (archaic). As you walk upwards the laurel trees adorned paved stone to the Temple and blooming rosemary bushes rub on you, you become part of an ancient procession celebrating the gifts of Mother Earth.
- Our next stop is the old commercial center of the island, Chalki. It is a noble village with great architecture. Here we will also see a Venetian tower of the island, the “Kitron” Distillery, and we will wander through the picturesque alleys.
- Arriving at the center of Naxos, we visit a precious gem of the island. The Church of Panagia Drosiani is the oldest church in the Balkans, and its frescoes of Jesus Christ and Saint George are unique and rare. Even more interesting is the belief that the church was built on top of an ancient sanctuary of the god Apollo, which is why the local tradition says that someone who visits early in the morning can hear sounds of the Apollonian lyre.
- Next stop, Apeiranthos, a village of high aesthetic architecture with marble-paved streets and Venetian towers, built at an altitude of 670m overlooking the Aegean Sea. It hosts five museums in which history, tradition, folklore, and geology interweave, demonstrating. Our next stop its authenticity.
- Our next stop is Flerio. In this area, in late 5th century BC people had formed a thriving community by carving the marble of the quarry into the forms of the Kouroi (singular:Kouros), imposing male statues weighing from 5 to 7 tones each, and in early 6th century BC, the equivalent female statues of the same magnitude, the Kores (singular: Kore). These statues were made as offerings to the gods and goddesses of that brilliant era. In this same quarry the famous Colossus of the Naxians, a 9m high Kouros, was carved and shipped to the Sanctuary of Apollo in Delos Island.
- Although we are full of impressions and photos, we conclude this unforgettable day trip with a stop at a traditional tavern on the island! Here, where the smells of roasted meat and cooked dishes open your appetite. Afterwards, we take the road back!
